Henry is 22 months and loves to actively read books. He joins in by wagging his finger and saying "No, No" and shakes my hand when Thing 1 and Thing 2 shake hands in the Cat in the Hat. He finishes sentences if I pause. Reading REALLY is fun ;)! He loves reading with rhythm and books that include noise words. It's also no surprise that he loves most any book pertaining to planes, trains, cars, trucks, etc. I've found that Henry has benefited greatly from reading with his babysitter, who is a high school french teacher. She and her daughter (6 weeks younger than Henry) come every week and they read books with different tricks, etc. I usually pick a bunch from the library and later purchase the books that become true favorites. Here are some of Henry's favorites.
Great Rhythm Books - read them with a enthusiasm, act out the actions and encourage kids to finish sentences!
Chicka Chicka Boom Boom: Anniversary Edition
Great rhythm and teaches letters.
Tikki Tikki Tembo
A didactic tale with great rhythm and a cultural sense of humor.
Clip-Clop
Great for parents who don't want to read a lot of words.
If You Give a Mouse a Cookie (If You Give...)
Cute story about a busy demanding mouse. Henry relates to the milk!
It's Quacking Time!
Great book when expecting a 2nd child.
The Cat in the Hat (Beginner Books(R))
Dr. Seuss books are great at this age. The rhyming helps Henry anticipate what word comes next.
Each Peach Pear Plum (Picture Puffins)
I love this book for the clever illustrations and rhythm wording. Henry loves picking out the hidden characters.
Automobile Books
Truck Driver Tom
LOTS of pictures of cars, trucks, etc.
Down by the Station
A very cute expansion of the song with cute illustrations. Although, I find it a little weird that the chicken is best friends with the worm.
Honk Honk! Beep Beep!
Cute illustrations with repetitive "Honk Honk Beep Beep"
Tugga-Tugga Tugboat
Imagine the tugboat hard at work - but it's really the bath.
Trainstop
Cute subway story about a girl who imagines she's in the country.
Truck
School Bus
Cars and Trucks and Things That Go (Giant Little Golden Book)
